10 ways to stop those Sales Calls

1) After the telemarketer finishes speaking, ask him/her to marry you.
2) Tell the telemarketer you are busy at the moment, and ask him/her if he/she will give you his/her home phone number so you can call him/her back.
3) Ask them to repeat everything they say, several times.
4) Tell them it is dinner time, BUT ask if they would please hold. Put them on your speaker phone while you continue to eat at your leisure. Smack your food loudly and continue with your dinner conversation.
5) Tell them that all business goes through your agent, and hand the phone to your five year old child.
6) Tell them you are hard of hearing and that they need to speak up...louder...louder...louder!
7) Tell them to speak very slowly because you want to write every word down.
8) If they start out with, "How are you today?",say "I'm so glad you asked, because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems............"
9) Cry out in surprise, "Helen, is that you? I've been hoping you'd call! How is the family?" When they insist they are not Helen, tell them to stop joking. This works especially well if the telemarketer is really MALE.
10) Tell the HSBC call center guy to call on your office number - and give him the ICICI call center number.

How to be successful in finances and career

This is a bit crazy. Aptly, it's excerpted from Osho's The Madman's Guide to Enlightenment . Nevertheless, I couldn't stop myself from posting an excerpt. I've warned you, now read on!!

***********************************************************************************
How can one be successful in life in the areas of finance and career?

"Richness, wealth, treasure -- divine treasure -- is there and you have not claimed it yet -- and it is yours, just for the asking. You need not spread your hands anywhere before anybody. The treasure is hidden within your own heart.

And people go on searching everywhere else except in the heart. They can go to the moon and to mars; and that journey seems to be easy. Man seems somehow to be very stubborn about going into his own heart. Maybe he is afraid that he may find it there.

Psychologists say that there is a very deep-rooted fear of success in the human mind. It looks absurd when you hear for the first time that man is afraid of success, but when you ponder over it, slowly slowly it dawns on you that it has some deep relevance.

Man is afraid of success, because if he succeeds, then what? That is the fear: then what? So in a subtle way he tries to succeed and yet creates such obstacles that he cannot succeed.

On one hand he tries to succeed, on the other hand he disturbs his own success so the game can go on. Just think of a day when you have succeeded and all that you desired has been attained, all that you always longed for is in your hands. Then what? -- that is the fear. Then what will you do? -- because all doing is searching, all doing is desiring, all doing is possible because there are goals which we have not attained yet. One is occupied, happily busy.

Just think of it a moment and even in thinking you will start trembling inside: if all is fulfilled, then what? Would you like to succeed to that point? And when you think about that you will see the point of what psychologists mean when they say there is a deep-rooted fear of success.
And it does not happen only as far as the inner success is concerned: outer success also. It almost always happens that when a person is at the last rung of succeeding, something goes wrong. And he thinks something has gone wrong from the outside, no. He does something -- he takes a wrong step, he moves in an opposite direction. He blames god and he blames fate and he blames society and others, but if you search deep down you will find that people fail only when they were just going to succeed.

There seems to be that deep fear which at the last moment says to them 'What are you doing? Avoid it.' It is very unconscious. They fail, and then they are busy again. That's how people keep themselves busy; life in and life out they keep themselves busy. This is called the wheel, the samsara, in the East; this is the world. That's why people don't go into the heart, which is the closest point to go to. They go on great journeys and pilgrimages, but they don't search within.

Somewhere, hidden, they know perfectly well that if they search there they are bound to find it -- then what? But sannyas means dropping that fear of success. The goal is very near... and within everybody's grasp."

SWOT Analysis for Dummies Like Me

SWOT anal-ysis is an important management term used by all and sundry to sound intelligent. My problem is after I utter the word, I have difficulty in taking it forward. Strength looks weakness and Opportunity looks like Threat to me. Every time I end up being jumbled and more confused.
But wait. I have found a remedy for myself. Let me know if it helps you too. Here's SWOT explained.
  • Strength: My wife.
  • Weakness: My neighbour's wife.

The Cow Theory of Business & Finance

Got to this link via Rajesh Jain

Mark Gilbert writes on Bloomberg: If Hedge Funds Kept Cows, Your Milk Would Go Sour. He builds on the famous cow theory on political systems. In communism, for example, you have two cows, your commune seizes them and charges you for milk. In a democracy, you have two cows, the cows outvote you 2-1 to ban all meat and dairy products, and you go bankrupt and starve to death.

Similarly, the cow theory can be applied to business & finance. Read his take on Buyouts, derivatives, currency markets, bond markets here. Enjoy. Just one example quoted down below.

Google Inc.
You have no cows. You slap advertisements on everyone else's cows. The milk floods in. You use the proceeds to reinvent the cow.

What Women Really Want?

This is copied shamelessly but it's worth sharing. I got this from AjiNIMC who is the moderator at Inferno, the Blogger hunt festival at AIMK

Here's an amazing story I read at AIMK by AjiNIMC

King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur’s youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death.

The question was: What do women really want?

What women wants?

Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch’s proposition to have an answer by year’s end. He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone:the princess, the priests, the wise men, and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first. The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table, and Arthur’s closest friend! Young Arthur was horrified. She was hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life. He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden, but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur. He said nothing was too big a sacrifice compared to Arthur’s life and the preservation of the Round Table. Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered Arthur’s question thus: “What a woman really wants,” she said, “is to be in charge of her own life.”

Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur’s life would be spared. And so it was, the neighboring monarch granted Arthur his freedom and Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding. The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen, lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened. The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half. "Which would you prefer?" she asked him. "Beautiful during the day … or at night?"

Lancelot pondered the predicament. During the day he could have a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old witch! Or, would he prefer having a hideous witch during the day, but by night a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous, intimate moments with? If you are a man reading this …) What would YOUR choice be? (If you are a woman reading this ..) What would YOUR MAN’S choice be? What Lancelot chose is below. BUT … make YOUR choice before you scroll down below. OKAY?

(Scroll down)

(Scroll down)

(Scroll down)

(Scroll down)

Noble Lancelot, knowing the answer the witch gave Arthur to his question, said that he would allow HER to make the choice herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time because he had respected her enough to let her be in charge of her own life. Now … what is the moral to this story?

The moral is

* If you don’t let a woman have her own way, things are going to get ugly.
* There is a witch in every woman no matter how beautiful she is!!

India Internet Companies: Overnight Success or Hardwork

The three public listed India Internet companies are InfoEdge, Rediff and Sify. While Info Edge is listed in India, Rediff and Sify are listed on Nasdaq.

Info Edge operates Naukri.com, Quadrangle, JeevanSathi.com and 99acres.com. They really impress me with their Internet marketing skills in India.

Mind you, they incorporated the business way back in 1995 and started Naukri in 1997.

Now during the past decade we have seen a boom and a bust. And it is only now that the number of internet users is approaching critical mass.

So looking at the booming Indian economy, growing internet community and recognition of online advertisement opportunities, I believe that the time for the Indian internet sector to grow has come. Reports say that the Indian Internet users should surpass 100 million by 2009.

And if InfoEdge is a leader in this sector, it is because of continuous hardwork and understanding of the Indian Internet market and it is just not an overnight success.

To give you an idea of what Internet marketing is all about here are some activities you can do for your website:

Online Polls, Opt-In Email, Newsletter, White Paper on your Industry, Online Contests, Mini Sites, Usability Analysis & Recommendations, Online Surveys, Articles related to your industry, Content Syndication, In-depth site evaluation & competitor analysis,Link Campaigns, Live Help, Affiliate Program, E-Mail Advertising, FAQ Section, E-Mail follow ups, Customer's Testimonial, Link Exchange, Banner Campaign, Monthly/Weekly Promotions through online discount coupons, Sweepstakes, etc.

However every client has unique goals, and needs a unique solution, the cost of any internet- marketing-solution campaign will depend on the type of campaign you choose/need, its scope, length and the amount of work needed to be put by you. Go to Internet Business Strategies for more insights.

OMG!!!! And I thought it was just plain fun and easy to Get Rich!!!

Create sophisticated diagrams with MS Word tools

This document introduces you to Word's basic diagramming features and explains how to use them to create great diagrams. Along the way, it creates an illustrative example.

This is a TechRepublic document

I had no idea that Word could do basic diagramming.

Word's diagramming features, which include the ability to create Cycle, Radial, Pyramid, Venn, and Target diagrams as well as the more standard flow and organizational charts. You can quickly create the diagrams that you need for your project.

The fact that most of us aren't aware of Word's diagramming features reminded me that most of the folks who use Word only take advantage of a small fraction of all the features that are packed into Word. Same applies to MS Excel which has amazing functions and we onlu use it for adding, multiplying, substracting and division!!

Learn the Art of Selling

Got this in my mail box about a Mega Sale. Read on

The manager of a megastore came to check on his new salesman.

"How many customers did you serve today?" the manager asked.

"One," replied the new guy.
"Only one?" said the boss. "How much was the sale?"
The salesman answered, "$58,334."

Flabbergasted, the manager asked him to explain.
"First I sold a man a fishhook," the salesman said. "Then I sold him a rod and a reel. Then I asked where he was planning to fish, and he said down by the coast. So I suggested he'd need a boat - he bought that 20-foot runabout. When he said his Volkswagen might not be able to pull it, I took him to the automotive department and sold him a big SUV."

The amazed boss asked, "You sold all that to a guy who came in for a fishhook?"
"No," the new salesman replied. "He actually came in for a bottle of aspirin for his wife's migraine. I told him, "Your weekend's shot. You should probably go fishing."

It's not about being a genius, it's about getting started

It's not about being a genius, it's about getting started.

Getting rich is no big deal. You just have to earn more than you can spend or spend less than what you earn. A man/woman can be rich by maximising his earnings and/or minimising his/her needs. Simple, isn't it?

Moreover it can be proved that Money is inversely proportional to knowledge. Meaning as your knowledge increases, the money you have will decrease!!

Well, there's a formula in Physics that says that Power=Force/Time. Now Knowledge is Power and Time is Money! So if we substitute the figures, it comes out that Knowledge= Force/Money. That indicates the truth that Knowledge is inversely proportional to Money!!

Take responsibility for your finances, get rich or die trying!

Don't limit yourself

Here's a story about George Dantzig - the famed mathematician who's contributions to Operations Research and Systems Engineering have made him immortal.

As a college student, George studied very hard and often late into the night. So late, that he overslept one morning, arriving 20 minutes late for Prof. Neyman's class. He quickly copied the two maths problems on the board, assuming they were the homework assignment. It took him several days to work through the two problems, but finally he had a breakthrough and dropped the homework on Neyman's desk the next day.

Six weeks later, on a Sunday morning, George was awakened at 6 a.m. by his excited professor. Since George was late for class, he hadn't heard the professor announce that the two unsolvable equations on the board were mathematical mind-teasers that even Einstein hadn't been able to answer.

But George Dantzig, working without any thoughts of limitation, had solved not one, but two problems that had stumped mathematicians for thousands of years.

Simply put, George solved the problems because he didn't know he couldn't.

You are not limited to the life you now live. You have accepted it as the best you can do at this moment. Any time you're ready to go beyond the limitations currently in your life, you're capable of doing that by choosing different thoughts. All you must do is figure out how you can do it, not whether or not you can. And once you have made your mind up to do it, it's amazing how your mind begins to figure out how.

A person is limited only by the thoughts that he/she chooses.

Contrary Proverbs

Every Action has an equal and an opposite reaction. Similarly, every proverb has an equal and an opposite proverb! There always exist two sides of the same coin! U be the judge.

All good things come to those who wait. BUT Time and tide wait for no man.

The pen is mightier than the sword. BUT Actions speak louder than words.

Wise men think alike. BUT Fools seldom differ.

The best things in life are free . BUT There's no such thing as a free lunch .

Slow and steady wins the race . BUT Time waits for no man .

Look before you leap . BUT Strike while the iron is hot .

Do it well, or not at all. BUT Half a loaf is better than none.

Birds of a feather flock together. BUT Opposites attract.

Don't cross your bri dg es before you come to them. BUT Forewarned is forearmed.

Doubt is the beginning of wisdom. BUT Faith will move mountains.

Great starts make great finishes. BUT It ain't over 'till it's over.

Practice makes perfect. BUT All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Silence is golden. BUT The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

You're never too old to learn. BUT You can't teach an old dog new tricks

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. BUT One man's meat is another man's poison.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. BUT Out of sight, out of mind.

Too many cooks spoil the broth. BUT Many hands make light work.

Hold fast to the words of your ancestors. BUT Wise men make proverbs and fools repeat them.

I will teach you to be rich

Here's an interview, I would have liked to do on my favorite blogger, Ramit

Ramit's interview

Just one of the excerpts to show the depth of the interview: "When I was in high school I got so frustrated because so many people would say, "Oh I'm not going to apply to Stanford, because even if I got in, I couldn't afford it." This is exactly the wrong way to think about it. The right way to think about it is "I'm going to apply everywhere. I'm going to do a great application, and if I get in, then I'll think about the money." And usually what happens is if you're good enough to get in, then they'll take care of you. I saw a lot of kids doing this and it made me sad. My parents were very middle class and there were four kids in the family. They told us, "You guys have got to get scholarships, otherwise you can't go to college." So we did! And there's no secret, it's the same things I talk about: take the initiative, be patient, learn from your mistakes, that sort of stuff".........

Cody McKibben's blog is a nice read too.

Journey of a thousand miles !

The journey of a thousand miles start with a single step. I mean I was very happy at my 25th post on my blog and now that I'm approaching 125, it's time to reorganise the blog.

The blog looks a bit cluttered with too many things at one place. So now I have decided to build a web site for my blog and I've called it Investing Gyaan: Taking responsibility for yourself.

The website will take its final shape in another month or so but do visit them and send suggestions.

The underlying philosophy of the site will be that it is vital to "take responsibility for yourself". And the first step to do that is to be well informed. We are not selling any financial product and do not represnt any financial product company. So we'll be independent and unbiased.

We are surrounded by persistent agents and financial advisors, aggressive financial product companies and our own ignorance of the knowledge required (and maybe the inertia?) to manage our money!! And it is said that Money is a bad master but a good servant. In any case, you have to manage it properly so that it may serve you properly.

We welcome your feedback and suggestions to improve this site. If you want to contribute by writing articles on a relevant subject, you are more than welcome. Please write to financeforu@gmail.com or ranjanvarma@gmail.com

Check them out!

Boss is always right: Your workplace obligations

Add to: Del.icio.us | Digg | Google | Reddit

Paul Glen has developed a rather simple philosophy of boss-subordinate relationships. Some excerpts

Wouldn't it be nice if every boss came with a standard API? It would be so easy to look at the interface specifications and know exactly what he expected, in what format he expected it, when you should deliver it, what predictable events would result from your input and how you should handle error conditions. All the politics would go away. Those pesky emotions would become a nonissue. Success would become deterministic.

Sadly, it will never be so simple. Every boss-subordinate connection is a custom job. This is both the promise and the pain of workplace relationships; they are cobbled together not of hardware or software, but of wetware (the gray, squishy stuff between our ears).

Part 1. A subordinate owes the boss and the organization three simple things:
Candor
Loyalty
Delivery

That's it. If I deliver on all three of those things, I can look myself in the mirror and feel that I've fulfilled my part of the employment bargain. Let's take a quick look at each one, because they are deceptively simple.

Part 2. Bosses owe their subordinates three simple things too:
Candor
Loyalty
Delivery

Paul Glen is the author of the award-winning book "Leading Geeks: How to Manage and Lead People Who Deliver Technology" (Jossey Bass Pfeiffer, 2003) and Principal of C2 Consulting.
